Ultima V Retrospective | The Tyranny of Virtue
With Ultima IV's ambiguous goal of mastering the eight virtues, the game was a slow-paced and meditative experience. The Avatar's trial wasn't overcome with the defeat of a big bad villain, but through self-reflection. Rather than continuing down this path of optimism & philanthropy, Ultima V asks the question: what happens when virtue is made mandatory?
In this episode of the Ultima Retrospective, we take a look at Origin System's late 1980's growing pains, their competition, and of course, Ultima V: Warriors of Destiny.
This is the 4th video in my Ultima Retrospective series. Watching earlier parts isn't necessary to enjoy this video, but it is recommended. They can be found here:

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar Retrospective | Reimagining the RPG
Переглядів 217 тис.2 місяці тому
After the release of Ultima III: Exodus, the members of Origin Systems would pack up and move across the country to the chilly town of North Andover, Massachusetts. Here, they would buckle down and create the follow-up to the much lauded Exodus. Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar would represent a sea change in the trajectory of both the Ultima series, and CRPGs in general. This video chronicles th...
A Dark Journey Through Shadow Tower | Series Retrospective

Quietly standing in the shadow of King's Field are the Shadow Tower games. Their sales were low and they didn't find much love with the critics. Yet Shadow Tower's menacing dark ambience, wholly different from that of it's brethren, has become more potent - and more interesting - with age. In this video, we'll look into the history of these games, their mechanics, and dig into their hopelessly ...
Ultima III Retrospective | Origins & Exoduses

In 1983 the Garriott brothers, dissatisfied with the state of the industry, took matters into their own hands, forming the now legendary Origin Systems. Within a year, the developer released Ultima III: Exodus - a game regarded as foundational not only within its own series, but for RPGs in general. This video chronicles the story of Richard Garriott's exodus from Sierra, and the origin of Orig...

Lost Odyssey | Review & Retrospective

Lost Odyssey is one of the Xbox 360's most beloved JRPGs... but in the grand scheme of things, that hasn't amounted to much. Trapped on a console that isn't known for it's selection of Japanese titles, its relevance in the world of RPGs has never exceeded the small number of devoted fans who sing it's praises. How did the concept for Lost Odyssey come about? How does it compare to contemporarie...

A Dark Journey Through King's Field | Series Retrospective

King's Field has earned distant respect from many FromSoftware fans - a series that the studio cut their teeth on. Yet, due to it's chunky polygonal graphics and esoteric gameplay systems, many find the games unapproachable. What stories can be unearthed in these Stygian worlds? And just how did one man on (and off) a motorcycle result in the phenomenon that is the "Soulslike" subgenre? Join me...

Of course by some I just mean me but the absolute comfy of the point remains it's unheard of levels of purely untarnished comfy... **straightens tie** ... Such comfy. Good times.

Isn't survival horror rooted in open world gameplay?.. Exploring the mansion in RE, exploring the town in SH. Both games required player exploration to progress. TEW2's open world areas are more linear than traditional survival horror games as you always have a navpoint showing where to go to progress the main story and there's nothing stopping you from going directly to that navpoint. Exploration, while certainly incentivised, is optional. I absolutely loved that they had all these optional areas that contained callbacks to the original game. They were really well done and it was really gratifying to have your choice to explore every building rewarded like that.

"move through dialogue in a sequential robotic way that doesn't convey any kind of emotion" Dude welcome to Japanese. Or, more accurately, any high context language/culture. They focus completely on not "what" is said but "how and when" it is said. This concept is really hard to grasp if you are only familiar with low context languages like English. This translation really shows how much work (in good translations) translators have to do to "fill in the blanks" of bare bones communication that is intuitive to native speakers of the original language.

I’m really enjoying this series and hope you cover all of the Ultima games. Your commentary is excellent. I received a Commodore 128 with a 1571 disk drive and an RGBI color monitor for Christmas 1985 and Ultima IV was one of the games I bought with some Christmas money. I was hooked. I always enjoyed those monster “variety packs” as I called them lol. The Jinx spell is wonderful against groups of lower intelligence monsters all jammed together in a dungeon room. Oh how I hated level six (or was it seven) of the abyss which went you around and around through the same Balron and Reaper filled rooms. I liked how the eight virtues formed the three principles. That was just so cool. I remember filling a notebook with things people said and figures of how the altar rooms worked and connected and so on. I was 13 at the time and only about six of us in junior high school had a computer at home. Next I purchased Ultima III and then when it came out in late 1988, Ultima V.

It's impossible to read that book and not feel the temptation of drawing a few maps on paper later on... What a cool underrated book in literature's history... It was heavily influential for some and heavily criticized for others, a mark of achieving greatness. Rest in peace brave soul

Most all computer people I know (including myself) are night people. What does it matter when someone does their work as long as it’s done? Just my opinion. Ultima V was the best Ultima ever with such a long and deep storyline. It took me a long time to win on the old Commodore 128 way back in 1988. Mages were a rare commodity in Ultima V and could really cast some great spells once they got to higher levels. Oh how I hated the Underworld. I burned up gems like no tomorrow and it was always dark and full of combat. I liked to equip invisibility rings and then blast the guards after refusing to pay their “tribute” ha ha. A superb review and retrospective here. Great job! 😎
